Runestones in Småland

The rune stone at Växjö Cathedral (Sm 10 - Swedish: Runstenen vid Växjö domkyrka ) is located on the outside of the east side of Växjö Cathedral in the Swedish city of Växjö in the historic province of Småland .

The rune stone is 1.15 m high and 0.58 m wide. It originated around the year 1000. Its existence had been forgotten for a long time. It was discovered in 1813 in the eastern wall of the cathedral. Before that it was covered by plaster. Its original location is unknown.

Its runic inscription reads, translated into the Latin alphabet:

... uki: reisti: stein: eftir: kunar. sun: kirimis x kuþ | healbi sel hans | tyki x | uikikir

Translated into German, the inscription reads:

Tyke - Tyke Viking built this stone in memory of Gunnar, Grim's son. May God help his soul.

It is possible that there were several people with the name Tyke in Växjö at the time the stone was built , so the term Vikings was added to distinguish them. At the same time, the name could indicate Tyke's participation in Viking trips. The Christian final formula, in smaller runes outside the serpentine ribbon, may have been applied afterwards. The fact that a man was given the name Viking shows that the word had a positive sound. The name appears on more than 20 rune stones (e.g. on the rune stone of Kårestad ).
