Växjö Cathedral
The Växjö Cathedral (Swedish "Växjö domkyrka") is the cathedral of the Diocese of Växjö in the Swedish city of Växjö in the historical province of Småland .
history
The introduction of Christianity in southern Sweden is traced back to St. Siegfried . A wooden church was built over his grave in Växjö in the 11th century, which also housed the head relics of his three nephews. In the 12th century Växjö became a bishopric and the wooden church was replaced by a stone church. In 1276 the church burned down. It was rebuilt. In the 15th century the church was expanded and got two towers. The church burned down three more times: in 1570 and 1611 the Danes set the church on fire and in 1740 the church was burned down by lightning .
The appearance of the church underwent major changes in the 19th century. 1957 to 1960 the appearance from the late Middle Ages was largely restored. The interior was designed in the style of the 50s of the last century. After another restoration, the church was reopened in 1995.
Outside on the east side of the church is the rune stone at Växjö Cathedral .
The inner
There is a pantocrator at the entrance . This picture was created by Kajsa Mattas in 1995 and is a stucco picture.
On the right is the source of life , a glass and stone baptismal font created in 1995 by Göran Wärff . The entrance to the soul choir is located directly at the baptismal font . Here is a painting from the 15th century. It depicts Adam and Eve's life, the fall of man and the expulsion from paradise. The windows in the soul choir show two pictures. They were created by Bo Beskow and show "Death plays chess with the knight" and "Christ as the tree of life".
On the left side of the cathedral is the tree of life and knowledge. It was created in 1995. There are figures by Eva Spångenberg near the tree of life and in the middle of the cathedral . They put “the baby Jesus in the arms of Mary and two apostles”.
The altar was created in 1959 and was created by Jan Brazda . The altar carpet represents the earth and dates from 1995. The altar shrine was created in 2002 by Bertil Vallien . It shows the cross and to the right and left the twelve apostles in the form of faces. Behind the altar there is a choir window, which shows the sky in yellow and blue colors.
Organs
There are three organs inside the church . The largest organ is from 2002 and is located above the gallery. It was built by the organ building company Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri. The instrument has 33 stops on two manuals and a pedal.
