Rjurikowo Gorodishche (also Rurikowo Gorodishche , Russian Рюриково Городище , translated castle town of Rurik ) is a former settlement and castle near Novgorod in Russia . It was the seat of the princes of Novgorod from the 9th to the 15th centuries. In Scandinavian sources it is called Holmgård .

Rurikowo Gorodishche is located about two kilometers south of the city on the Volkhov River near its outflow from the Ilmen Lake . Immediately above the Sievers Canal flows into the Wolchow, which has connected Msta and Wolchow since the beginning of the 19th century, bypassing the Ilmen Lake.

history

According to archaeological finds and written evidence, the settlement emerged in the 9th century as the actual center of the Novgorod Rus . It was on an important route from Scandinavia to Byzantium . Numerous finds of Scandinavian and Baltic production methods (including weapons, armor and runic inscriptions) prove that the rulers of the castle were not native.

At the end of the 10th century, an episcopal quarter with churches and various buildings was built. In 1103 the Church of the Annunciation ( церковь Благовещения ) was built. After 1136 the castle became the preferred seat of the princes again after they were expelled from Novgorod. After 1482, the settlement increasingly lost its importance, since Novgorod has belonged to the Grand Duchy of Moscow since then .

The castle was damaged in World War II .
