Rusco Tower , also Rusco Castle or Rusko Castle , is a tower house near the Scottish town of Gatehouse of Fleet in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The Tower House is located in a sparsely populated region around four kilometers northwest of the Gatehouse of Fleet near the confluence of the Big Water of Fleet and Little Water of Fleet to form the Water of Fleet . The lands of Rusco came into the possession of Robert Gordon of Lochinvar through marriage in the early 16th century . Around this time the Rusco Tower was built. The four-storey defense tower was inhabited until 1890.

Rusco Tower has a simple, elongated floor plan of 11.7 m × 8.8 m. The quarry stone masonry is between 1.8 and 2.4 m thick. Above the entrance door on the east side there is a weathered coat of arms. It shows two shields, with two unicorns holding the upper one, and the Scottish coat of arms. A pressed arched opening can be found on the north side. On this flank, a two-story, 17.4 x 6.4 m extension was probably added in the 17th century. This was demolished in 1974, turning a former passage inside the building into an opening outside. Several small windows are irregularly distributed over the facades. The Tower House closes with a cantilevered crenellated reinforcement with machiculi .

A high room with a vaulted ceiling is set up on the ground floor . The upper floors are accessible via a spiral staircase on the southeast edge.
