Ruskin College

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ruskin College in Oxford is an independent college , the members of the courses offered by the University of Oxford to attend. Unlike most Oxford colleges, it is not one of the university's constituent colleges and its members do not typically graduate from Oxford University.

It is named after John Ruskin and was founded in 1899 with the stated aim of providing members of the English working class with an education that would enable them to assume leading roles in the labor movement , particularly in trade unions , the Labor Party , cooperatives and the like. The college is still committed to what is known as the working class of English society, which is reflected in its focus on adult applicants with low formal qualifications (the average age of its students is 35 according to Ruskin College).
