Russell Frehling

Russell Frehling (* around 1950) is an American installation artist and composer.

Frehling studied at Brandeis University until 1974 , where he received the Reiner Prize for composition. After taking private lessons with Pauline Oliveros and Morton Feldman , he studied electronic music with Robert Ashley and David Behrman at the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College .

Between 1975 and 1980 he ran a recording studio and worked in Iki (Japan) on behalf of Greenpeace on acoustic underwater fences for dolphins to prevent conflicts between fishermen and dolphins. He then worked as a live electronics engineer and computer musician with Oliveros' Deep Listening Band (including Unquenchable Fire with Joe McPhee ) and their New Circle Five Band .

In addition to his work as a studio technician for deep listening, he did the mastering for various rock and pop bands, was a partner of the multimedia artist Gustavo Matamoros and vice-president of the Pauline Oliveros Foundation . More recently he has concentrated on sound installations on buildings and in nature.
