Russian Orthodox Churches Abroad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Russian Orthodox Churches abroad are several Orthodox churches in Russia and other countries.

history

In the 1920s, congregations of exiles from the Soviet Union emerged in Western Europe and North America , who separated themselves from the official Russian Orthodox Church. Out of these, the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad was formed in 1927 . In the following decades this became one of the most important and largest Orthodox churches in general, but was not recognized by the canonical churches associated with the Moscow Patriarchate.

Since 2001, a number of smaller churches have sprung up that split off from the Russian Orthodox Church abroad for various reasons, but called themselves the Russian Orthodox Church abroad . The main reasons for the new founding were the efforts of the Russian Church Abroad to approach the Russian Orthodox Church. This was rejected by numerous clergymen and believers. Another reason was the need for official registration as a separate church in the successor states of the Soviet Union (Moldova).
