The Russian True Orthodox Church is an Orthodox Church located in Russia , Ukraine , Belarus, and Kazakhstan . It is not recognized by the other Orthodox churches.

Structures

The church consists of five dioceses in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. Until 2015 there was also an eparchy in the USA, until 2016 a mission in France. The head is Metropolitan Tikhon of Omsk and Siberia.

Teaching and Practice

The Church is Orthodox in her theology and spiritual practice. The liturgy is celebrated in the Byzantine rite , the calendar is the Julian calendar.

The church is very different from the Russian Orthodox Church. She does not accept ordinations of this church. The reason for this is that the Russian Orthodox Church in the Soviet Union has adapted too much to the political system and has thus deviated from canonical legality. She also condemns their ecumenism as being too close to the Roman Catholic Church.

history

In 1998 the bishops Lasar (Schurbenko) of Odessa and Benjamin (Russalenko) of Kuban separated from the Russian Orthodox Church abroad and founded the Russian True Orthodox Church . The parishes originally came from the oppositional Catacomb Church.

In 2001, the Church submitted to the new Russian Orthodox Church Abroad under Metropolitan Vitaly . In 2002 Lasar and Benjamin consecrated new bishops without the consent of Metropolitan Vitali. They were then removed from office by this church.

In 2003 they both re-established a Russian True Orthodox Church . In 2006 and 2007, numerous clergy and parishes from the Russian Orthodox Church abroad joined in, who refused to merge with the Russian Orthodox Church. This included the Lesna Monastery in France. A new eparchy was formed in the United States. A Russian Orthodox Church was also established in Greece .

In 2008 there were talks with the Church of the True Orthodox Christians of Greece (Chrysostomos Synod) about a Eucharistic and church fellowship . According to its own information, around 200 parishes belonged to the church this year. In the years that followed, clergy and congregations joined and left.

In 2014 there were considerable upheavals within the church due to different assessments of the political events in eastern Ukraine. Many clergymen have left the church since 2015, including the Lesna monastery in France. The reason was also a more radical theological and canonical demarcation from the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2016, the eparchy in the USA also dissolved and became independent.
