South Yemen uprising

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Former People's Democratic Republic of Yemen , now a sought-after state of the separatists in South Yemen

The South Yemen uprising openly began on April 27, 2009, the former South Yemen's official independence day, with protests and attacks on Yemen government forces .

There had been mounting tension across the South since 2007 as the South's independence movement grew in strength. It started with former military officers in the South, forced into compulsory retirement, demanding higher pension payments. The protesters have accused President Ali Abdullah Salih of corruption and openly demanded independence from his government in the capital Sanaa in a northern mountain region. The uprising takes place at the same time as heavy fighting with Shiite insurgents in the north of the country. In 1994 there was another unsuccessful attempt by the South to restore the former People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (DPRJ, South Yemen).

The commander of the South Yemeni socialist separatists is the former VDRJ Prime Minister Ali Salim al-Baidh , his predecessor Ali Saleh al-Yafee died in 2010. Tareq al-Fadhli has stood by him since then .

30 security guards have been killed so far.
More than 400 are missing on the part of the separatists. By March 12, 2010, more than 70 people who were largely uninvolved in the conflict had been killed.

Insurgents

The political movement behind the uprising is a southern movement called a socialist group. Led by South Yemeni leaders and opposition figures, this group calls for peaceful protests. However, these protests have often turned into rioting recently, some involving armed fighters. Furthermore, the uprising is being carried out by Islamist groups, former military commanders and South Yemeni tribes. There are several jihadist movements active in South Yemen, some of which belong to al-Qaeda , in particular a group called the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army and followers of Tariq al-Fadhli. Naser al-Wahishi , the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula , expressed his support for the South Yemeni independence movement. However, the socialist leaders of the South Yemen Movement have repeatedly denied any links with al-Qaeda. Some have claimed that the Salih government is using al Qaeda to get foreign support against insurgents in the north and south.
