German about

IHS in 1645 on February 25th, Mr. Jan Czerwenik, resident of the city of Teschen, son of Mati, was murdered by his companions. In this place may God have mercy on his soul. AMEN.

Atonement crosses have been set up after a murder since the Middle Ages to call on passers-by to pray for the salvation of the slain. He could not receive any more sacraments and was therefore dependent on the intercession according to the Catholic view. The stones were mostly erected by the perpetrators or their relatives.

Several hundred atonement stones have been preserved in Silesia.
