S3L inverter

The S3L inverter (abbreviation for English Soft Switching Three Level inverter ) is a power electronic inverters with a high efficiency for use in particular in phase drives , as feed-in inverter in photovoltaic - or wind turbines and power supplies. The circuit concept was developed in 2009 at the HTWG Konstanz .

Inverters are used to convert direct voltage into alternating voltage . Mostly they are constructed using power transistors and diodes . These are operated as electronic switches. In the usual design with "hard" switching operations, switching losses occur, which reduce the efficiency , especially at high switching frequency values . To improve this, the so-called three-level inverter is often used for inverters with a higher output (from approx. 10 kW) .

The S3L inverter is based on such a hard-switching 3-stage inverter in T-type design. A relief network consisting of a few passive components is added to this. It prevents high values ​​of voltage and current and thus high values ​​of power loss from occurring at the same time during the switching processes. This means that all switching processes are "smooth". Switching losses are thus largely avoided. Since the relief network also works without any losses inherent in the principle, the efficiency of the inverter shows good values ​​even with high values ​​of the switching frequency.

A variant of the S3L inverter is called SS3L inverter (abbreviation for Super Soft Switching Three Level Inverter). It is characterized by particularly favorable properties in terms of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This is achieved in a simple manner in that the activation processes of the power transistors are slowed down by their activation. The high efficiency and the other properties of the S3L inverter version are not affected.
