The Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU) is the union of South African textile workers. It also organizes employees from the wholesale and retail sectors, leather processing and shoe manufacturing, laundry and dry cleaning, dyeing and agriculture. About 66 percent of the members are women.

In 1998 the union launched an education and information program on health risks for its members. The focus of this initiative is on measures to combat the HIV epidemic in southern Africa . There are also activities to combat tuberculosis and, in general, to improve medical service through mobile offers in underserved regions.

SACTWU is a member of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU).

history

SACTWU was formed in 1989 as a result of a merger of several trade unions, including the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union of South Africa , which was a member of COSATU and which was formed in 1987 as a merger of unions such as the National Union of Textile Workers . The oldest predecessor union was the Witwatersrand Tailors Association , which was formed in 1918 and to which mainly Boers belonged. The resulting Garment Workers' Union , among other things, was headed by Solly Sachs from 1928 to 1952 .

scholarship

With the SACTWU Bursary Fund, the union manages the largest scholarship fund from among the trade unions in South Africa. All scholarships from this source are non-refundable. The fund was set up in 1975 by union members for the purpose of helping one another to give children better opportunities in education and training. The aim of granting the scholarship is to provide partial financial support for studies at universities, technicians and other institutions of higher education. The payments are transferred directly to the respective educational institution, provided that it is institutionalized by the National Department of Education .
