The SAE International , former name Society of Automotive Engineers ( SAE ; German " Association of Automotive Engineers " ) is a nonprofit organization for technology and science that is dedicated to the advancement of mobility technology.
The company was founded in 1905 as the Society of Automobile Engineers . Originally, she was committed to creating standards in the automotive industry and promoting the exchange of ideas and knowledge. The SAE had 30 founding members, including Andrew L. Riker as first president and Henry Ford as vice president. In 1916 it had 1,800 members and expanded its field of activity to all forms of transportation. The SAE develops automotive and aviation standards. For this reason, the name has now been changed.
After the Second World War , the SAE began to work together with other standardization and mobility organizations around the world. Branches have also been established in many continents.
Established standards include the SAE viscosity classes for motor oil , the SAE PS and the standardization of the vehicle identification number . Furthermore, numerous standards for electronic control devices, such as communication protocols and interfaces, for example SAE J1939 or SAE J1979, have also been defined .
