The vehicles of the GDA class of the South African Railways (SAR) were articulated locomotives of the Garratt design . The five machines delivered in 1929 were intended for branch line operations with axle loads of 13.9 t; the axis order was (1'C1 ') (1'C1').

The design of the locomotives was based on the GD class , but were built by Linke-Hofmann - the only Garratts from this manufacturer.

In contrast to the GD class, the GDA had a round standing boiler ceiling and water tanks with a curved top and rounded upper longitudinal edges. With the same grate surface, the boiler had a larger diameter and slightly larger heating and superheater surfaces. With the same water and coal supplies, the axle load of the GDA was around a ton higher than that of the GD.

Initially, the machines were based on the north coast route in Natal , where they were stationed in Stanger . They later came to Port Elizabeth and were used on the route to Grahamstown .

Most recently, the locomotives, which were not very popular with the staff, were used for ballast trains. Two copies have been preserved - not operational: No. 2257 is a memorial on the station forecourt in Grahamstown, No. 2259 belongs to the South African National Railway and Steam Museum in Krugersdorp .
