The vehicles of the class HF of the South African Railways (SAR) were articulated locomotives of the Modified Fairlie type . It was the third and last class of this design that was only available from the SAR. Why the railway did not follow the class designations FC and FD with “FE”, but rather HF for “Henschel Fairlie”, is no longer understandable today.

Ten locomotives were delivered in 1927 in parallel with an order for Garratt locomotives of the GE class , and another followed in 1928. The drive frames of both classes were the same in their drive and cylinder dimensions, but the HF used a bar frame instead of the plate frame. In contrast to the GC and FC or GD and FD classes, the GE and HF boilers differed significantly: with roughly the same grate surface and radiant heating surface, the HF boiler had a greater length with a smaller diameter. This resulted in a smaller tubular heating surface, but a larger superheater .

Visually, the HF resembled class GF ; the driver's cabs had the characteristic of German standard locomotives at the top, which was otherwise not common in South Africa.

A disadvantage of the Modified Fairlie compared to the Garratt also proved to be the large overhangs, which led to greater stress on the pivot pins and thus to higher maintenance costs. The HF locomotives were decommissioned by 1951, while the GE Garratts procured at the same time were in use until the 1970s. No copy of the class HF has survived.
