The class J vehicles of the South African Railways (SAR) were tank locomotives with a 2'C2 ' wheel arrangement.

The locomotives were built in 1915 for use on the south coast line in Natal starting from Durban , where they were to replace or supplement the tank locomotives with the same wheel arrangement (classes C2 and E ) from the time of the Natal Government Railways (NGR) .

The locomotives built by Nasmyth Wilson were designed by DA Hendrie, the then Chief Mechanical Engineer of the SAR, who had previously held this position at the NGR. In appearance and in the use of a plate frame, the design therefore corresponded to the NGR tank locomotives; In contrast to these, however, it was equipped with a superheater , piston valves and Walschaerts control .

Increasing train weights soon meant that these machines were also pushed into shunting service, for which some of them were relocated to the Cape Province . The last ones were taken out of service in 1957.

Locomotive No. 341 has been preserved and belongs to the South African National Railway and Steam Museum .
