SN-42 ( Russian Стальной нагрудник СН-42 ) refers to a Soviet body armor from the Second World War .

history

Several models of protective equipment were built in the Soviet Army , named SN-38, SN-39, SN-40, SN-40A, and SN-42. The number stands for the year of development. All versions have been tested, but only the SN-42 ( Russian Стальной нагрудник , Stal'noi Nagrudnik , lit. "Stahllatz") was produced in series. (The alternative Cyrillic abbreviation for the vest was marked with СН, transcribed from Cyrillic these are S and N).

It consisted of two steel plates that protected the upper body and the crook of the hips. The plates were 2 mm thick and weighed 3.5 kg. This armor was made for the SHISBr ( pioneers ) and the tankodesantniki ( infantry that sat on the tanks ).

In combat operations it turned out that projectiles from an MP-40 (caliber 9 mm) could not penetrate the armor from a distance of 100 to 125 m. It was very useful in house-to-house fights , like those in the Battle of Stalingrad .
