SRID

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The acronym SRID stands for the English term Spatial Reference Identifier (analogously "Reference identification number for spatial coordinate systems"). These identifiers are used to uniquely identify spatial coordinate system definitions, regardless of whether they are projected , unprojected or local coordinate systems.

Almost all geographic information system providers either maintain their own SRID implementations or refer to the implementation of organizations, for example the EPSG codes of the European Petroleum Survey Group Geodesy (EPSG) or the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (OGP).

The definition of SRIDs is administered by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), a non-governmental volunteer organization. SRIDs are used in geographic information systems (GIS) , for example , to describe the coordinate system on which the GIS is based.
