The Open Source Geospatial Foundation ( OSGeo ) is a non-profit organization headquartered in Delaware , USA and was founded to promote the development and use of free and open source geographic information systems (GIS). She has been organizing the FOSS4G conference since 2006 . OSGeo is represented in German-speaking countries by the FOSSGIS association.
history
In November 2005, the Technical Working Group of announced MapServer ( "MapServer Technical Steering Committee") , the University of Minnesota , the DM Solutions Group and the software company Autodesk a foundation for MapServer that "MapServer Foundation" to. At a meeting on February 4, 2006, the foundation called "The Open Source Geospatial Foundation" was established.
The goals of the foundation are:
- Promotion of open source software related to geographic information systems
- Promote free geospatial data
- Improve the presence of open source GIS in teaching
The work of the foundation takes place a. in regional working groups, the so-called "Local Chapters" , which endeavor to address the concerns of OSGeo in their respective regions . In the German-speaking area, FOSSGIS e. V. active.
Projects
Software projects
One focus is on the joint development of software projects for the management of geographic information. The OSGeo Foundation ensures legal security for the user through an acceptance process ( "incubation" ), which all OSGeo projects must go through, and ensures a healthy developer community .
Web mapping software
The area of web mapping software includes web-based map applications such as map servers, client environments and service orchestration and management software. The services, which are often distributed worldwide, can be loosely coupled with one another using the standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Map services generate dynamic image files consisting of vector, raster data, or a combination of these two types of data. Web applications request the map images via the surrounding rectangle. Additional interactivity is offered by the possibility of changing vector data.
Desktop GIS
Desktop geographic information systems are the applications that most GIS users have direct contact with. The focus of the desktop GIS is on resource-intensive calculations, for example the processing of rasterized maps. The possibility of integrating distributed services has been adapted from the web-based GIS.
Software libraries
One software library implemented in C ++ and one implemented in Java for spatial data processing form the basis of many other OSGeo open source projects.
Metadata catalogs
A metadata catalog is used in order to be able to link the globally distributed services in a meaningful way (semantically and syntactically correct).
Education and teaching
Another goal of OSGeo is the cooperation with universities and educational institutions to support the creation and maintenance of curricula. The efficient use of software requires that it is not only good, but also that it is used competently. The good training of specialists is therefore very much in the interests of OSGeo.
Public geospatial data
As a third focus, OSGeo promotes the free availability of spatial data. Geodata arise at all levels and in the most varied of forms, a large area comes from public administration and is therefore also a public good. To value this asset, to make it usable and to promote it is a long-term and sustainable task that is made considerably easier by the use of free and open source software. Furthermore, the OSGeo also contact to licensing issues , commercial use of public data and partnerships with the private sector.
FOSS4G conference
OSGeo has organized the FOSS4G conference every year since 2006, where FOSS4G stands for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial .

OSGeoLive
With OSGeoLive , OSGeo offers a live system that comes up with free and open source GIS software, free sample data and documentation. The system is based on Lubuntu (up to version 7.9 on Xubuntu ) and contains the OSGeo projects as well as other free GIS software, some of which can also be installed on Windows and Mac. An ISO image for creating OSGeoLive on DVD or USB stick is available on the association's website . Versions are published annually, every six months until 2017.
