The FOSSGIS e. V. (Abbreviation for Free and Open Source Software for Geoinformation Systems ) is a German association founded in January 2001 with the aim of promoting free and open source GIS software and free geodata in Germany. The association is a Local Chapter of the OSGeo and OpenStreetMap Foundation (OSMF), managed the FreeGIS database until 2007 and organizes the FOSSGIS conference .

history

The association was founded in April 2000 as the GRASS user association (GAV). In September 2008 the name was changed to FOSSGIS e. V. In the German-speaking area he has been representing the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) as a regional association since September 2008 .

FreeGIS

The FreeGIS portal, which has been run since 1999 and which maintains a central database with information about free GIS software and free spatial data, as well as a mailing list for corresponding software updates, was taken over by the GRASS user association in September 2007 and is now supported by FOSSGIS.

OpenStreetMap

In Germany, FOSSGIS e. V. performs administrative tasks for the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project and, among other things, oversees negotiations with authorities and other institutions. He also runs the server for the German OSM community. At events such as LinuxTag , FOSSGIS organizes joint stands together with the OSM community.

In June 2003 a first user meeting for users of the UMN MapServer program took place in Berlin , followed by the first German-language user conferences of OSGeo. These took place from 2003 to 2005 under the name "UMN MapServer User Conference" and recorded increasing numbers of participants. At the conferences, not only was the UMN MapServer discussed, but also other free GIS projects, which is why the name was changed to "FOSSGIS Conference" from 2006 onwards.

Since 2011, lectures at the conferences have been recorded by the VOC of the Chaos Computer Club , streamed live , made available on YouTube and archived by the Technical Information Library.

Until 2010, FOSSGIS offered the GISLive project. It was a Debian-based live system that consisted entirely of free and open source software and free geospatial data. Due to the success of OSGeoLive, the GISLive project was discontinued and the energy was put into OSGeoLive of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation . OSGeoLive is based on Lubuntu and contains selected OSGeo projects and other free GIS software.
