GRASS GIS is a hybrid, modular geographic information system - software with grid and vector-oriented functions. GRASS stands for Geographic Resources Analysis Support System , GIS for Geographical Information System .
It is under the GNU General Public License and is therefore freely available software. The system offers grid - and topological vector data functionality , 3D raster Voxelbearbeitung , image processing , visualization capabilities and the import and export of various GIS data formats. As portable software it runs on various operating systems with a graphical user interface and optionally via command line .
Development history of GRASS
From the 1970s, authorities in the USA began to digitally store and process geographic data. From the mid-1980s onwards, various companies developed geographical information systems with increasingly user-specific solutions. The aim was to " ... provide a comprehensive collection of tools for the acquisition, storage, provision when required, transformation and representation of spatial data from the real world in the context of special applications ". GRASS was also developed in this context by a number of US government agencies from 1982 onwards. The fact that this was financed by tax funds led to the (free) use of this program due to American case law.
At the beginning of the 1990s, GRASS version 4.0 was first published on the Internet. In 1997 the GRASS development team was founded at Baylor University , Waco (Texas), and released a new version 4.2 in November of that year. Since 1999 GRASS has been published under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Up to now, GRASS has been oriented more towards raster and image processing and, in terms of performance, could be compared with ArcInfo , which has so far been more oriented towards vector processing. GRASS has now developed into a powerful GIS.
Due to the modular structure (GRASS GIS is a Unix-typical collection of many small programs), individual elements can be easily connected with your own applications under a user interface.
Versions
Extensive bio-static applications were already integrated in GRASS from version 5.2. At the moment GRASS is available in the stable version 7.0 with extended functionality and a new vector model. The development is being coordinated from the USA by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation , previously also from Italy and Germany, while Baylor University has withdrawn from development entirely.
GRASS users' association
In 2000 the GRASS user association was founded. V. (GAV), from which the FOSSGIS association emerged in September 2008 . FOSSGIS represents the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) in German-speaking countries.
