GeoServer is a map server software. It is characterized by conformity to the standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium and implements the Web Map Service (WMS), Web Coverage Service (WCS), Web Feature Service (WFS, also transactional) and Web Processing Service (WPS). As a project of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation , the program is free software .
history
The Free Feature Server project , also known as FreeFS , has merged into GeoServer.
technology
In the development of GeoServer, great importance is attached to the observance of open standards in order to enable interoperability with other applications. The server software is programmed in Java and is based on GeoTools .
GeoServer implements the versions WMS 1.1.1 and 1.3.0 as well as WFS / WFS-T 1.0.0, 1.1.0 and 2.0.0, whereby the versioning of the WFS-T is also possible with an extension . Since GeoServer version 1.5, the software also supports WCS, currently versions 1.0.0 and 1.1.1. With the release of GeoServer 2.1 in May 2011, a. A WPS version 1.0.0 is also available as an extension.
GeoServer uses the tile cache GeoWebCache (GWC) to store the tile graphics of a WMS . The services created with it meet the standards TMS 1.0.0, WMS-C 1.1.1 and WMTS 1.0.0.
use
With GeoServer it is possible to offer geographic data as web services ( geo services ) in a network, be it in a local network or on the Internet. The representation takes place with the help of the WMS or WCS in the form of graphics or with the help of the WFS the actual characteristics e.g. B. issued as GML . The included WFS has the transactional extension (WFS-T), which makes it possible to edit and save the offered data.
In connection with a client , applications can be created with which one can view existing map data. The functions (e.g. zooming , moving) differ depending on the client . GeoServer can also be used in connection with a desktop GIS such as uDig , whereby the individual services serve as the data basis.
