QGIS (formerly Quantum-GIS ) is a free geographic information system software for viewing, editing, recording and analyzing spatial data .

application

QGIS is a geographic information system for viewing, editing and recording spatial data and is licensed under the GNU General Public License . The main features of the application are the broad support of common vector data and raster data such as Shapefile or GeoTIFF , but also spatial databases such as PostGIS and SpatiaLite , sophisticated digitizing tools for capturing vector data and a print compilation for easy creation of map printouts.

The QGIS architecture is based heavily on extensions, noteworthy are the fTools tools for general vector-based tasks or the GRASS extension for sophisticated spatial analyzes. A GPS extension makes it possible to read GPX files or to access a GPS device directly. Other extensions allow the integration of WMS and WFS services.

Essential parts of the graphical user interface are translated into over 30 different languages.

Programming interface

The basis of QGIS and its extensions is the platform-independent Qt library , which enables the development of applications with graphical user interfaces in the style of the host operating system (QWindowsVistaStyle, QWindowsXPStyle, QMacStyle).

QGIS offers a programming interface that allows the use of existing QGIS functionalities in your own programs or the writing of extensions for QGIS. Extensions can be developed in both C ++ and Python ( PyQt ). The programming interface is divided into four modules:

  • QGis.Core for basic functionalities such as data access, geometries or projections
  • QGis.Gui for user interface elements
  • QGis.Analysis with classes for analyzing vector and raster data
  • MapComposer with classes of print composition

System requirements

hardware

Due to the relatively low memory requirement and the associated low hardware requirements, QGIS is also suitable for use on older hardware or can run parallel to other applications.

operating system

QGIS runs on macOS , Linux , Unix and Windows XP or higher. A preliminary version is available as a mobile app for Android .
