SSIF panorama multiple unit

The second-class multiple unit 85, which was marked as ABe, was on July 22, 2008 in front of 89, 812 and 86 in Intragna station

In 2004, the Italian Società subalpina di imprese ferroviarie (SSIF) ordered three new three-part panorama multiple units from the Officine Ferroviaire Veronesi and Skoda , but these were changed into four-part compositions during the planning phase. These were delivered in the course of 2007 and consist of the following vehicles:

  • End railcar side Domodossola: ABe 4/4 Pp 81 "Domodossola", 83 "Masera", 85 "Trontano"
  • End railcar on the Locarno side: Be 4/4 Pp 82 "Toceno", 84 "Craveggia", 86 "Villette"
  • Medium railcar: Be 4/4 Pi 87, 88, 89
  • Intermediate car (not driven): Rimorchiata P 810, 811, 812

The type designations ABe and Be did not always match the class of car that actually existed. The compositions were formed as follows in July 2008:

  • 8 3 - 87 - 810 - 82 1st class side Domodossola (car 83)
  • 8 1 - 88 - 811 - 8 4 1st class on both sides (each in the end compartment of car 81 and 84)
  • 85 - 812 - 89 - 86 1st class, side Locarno (whole car 86)

In April 2019, the first class was arranged uniformly in the end compartment of the ABe 4/4 side Domodossola. The assignment of the vehicles to the compositions was the same.

  • 8 3 - 87 - 810 - 82
  • 8 1 - 88 - 811 - 84
  • 8 5 - 89 - 812 - 86

2nd class compartment of ABe 81

The two middle cars have 51 seats, the end Be 54 seats. In the ABe there are 17 places in 1st class and 16th places in 2nd class (originally 19 places and still inscribed). 1st class has the same seats and the same seat spacing as 2nd class, but armrests are fitted between the double seats and only single seats are arranged on one side, which widens the aisle.

These vehicles are normally used in the summer season as three fixed compositions ABe - Be - Rimorchiata - Be; if available, they each run a pair of trains Domodossola – Locarno – Domodossola.

The ABe 8/8 24 "Vigezzo", which was converted into a panorama railcar in 2006, is used as a reserve train . The substructure has been revised and the car body has been replaced by a new building that looks very similar to the new build vehicles. Since the space available is much smaller than in the new trains, an ABe 4/6 is also used, as it is provided with a different coupling as a forerunner or trailer.
