SSR travel

The Swiss Student Travel Service , also known as SSR Reisen , was a Swiss cooperative that emerged in 1962 from the Foreign Office of the Association of Swiss Student Unions with the aim of enabling students to travel and stay at home and abroad.

history

"SSR Reisen" was founded as a student self-help organization until the mid-1970s, becoming a company with an annual turnover of more than 30 million francs and around 80 permanent employees. In 1978 "SSR Reisen" received a corporate constitution. “SSR-Reisen” offered sports trips , package tours and group tours , language courses , workshops, “Eurotrain” and SSR's own hotels. In the 1990s, "SSR Reisen" had over 250 employees, 15 branches and sales of more than 120 million francs. Due to difficult economic conditions towards the end of the 1990s and a tight equity base, "SSR-Reisen" was forced to cooperate with " STA Travel " in 1998 : "SSR Reisen AG " was founded, of which 60% of the shares in "STA Travel" were sold; henceforth the company was called "SSR-Travel AG". In 2000, the cooperative sold the remaining 40% stake, transferred the cooperative's assets to the Swiss Foundation for Solidarity in Tourism and subsequently dissolved. In 2003, the formerly largest self-managed company in Switzerland was liquidated. The archive of the Swiss Student Travel Service Cooperative is located in the Swiss Social Archives . The holdings include paper documents, photographs and videos.
