Saalfeld Bund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A non- denominational alliance between the ducal houses of Electoral Saxony , Hesse and Bavaria , founded in Saalfeld on October 24, 1531, is called the Saalfeld Bund (also known as the opponents' association ) . The members united that they did not recognize the election of Ferdinand of Austria as Roman-German king in 1530 and wanted to push back the Habsburg influence in the empire.

The allies completely excluded denominational differences. In the charter of founding they promised each other help in the event that they were attacked by the Habsburgs for protesting against the election.

After its founding, the federation established links with the European opponents of the Habsburgs. Denmark and France were finally won as allies outside the imperial borders in 1531 and 1532 respectively. As early as the summer of 1534, the Saalfeld Confederation dissolved again with the final recognition of Ferdinand's royal title in the Kaaden and Linz treaties .
