The building was erected around 1850 as a Greek Orthodox church . It wasconverted into a mosqueafter the persecution of the Greeks in the Ottoman Empire in 1914–1923 and the subsequent exchange of population between Greece and Turkey in 1928.

Ceiling decorations of the former church

After the conversion, the church, built on the plan of an Orthodox cross, was initially called the bazaar mosque ( Çarşı Camii ) - while retaining the bell tower built by the Greeks. The historical icons, however, have been removed and the frescoes painted over.

Since the bell tower was destroyed in an earthquake in 1944 and converted into a clock tower , the mosque has been called the "mosque with clock" ( Saatli Camii ). In September 2003, the minaret fell on the church in a storm and damaged the brick-roofed dome.

With a height of 24 meters, the 375 square meter church was the second largest in Ayvalık County (Greek: Kydonies). The minaret built for this is 44 meters high.
