Sabine Land
Coordinates: 78 ° 17 ' N , 18 ° 12' E
Sabine-Land is an area on the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard .
geography
Sabine-Land connects the central part of Spitzbergen, Nordenskiöld-Land , in which the large settlements Longyearbyen and Barentsburg are located, with the far north. Nordenskiöld Land is in the southwest of Sabine Land, to the north of it, separated by the inner arms of the Isfjorden , lies the Bünsow Land peninsula and the largely glaciated Olav V Land . In the west lies the innermost part of the Storfjord with the Wichebukta and in the far south you get to Heer-Land .
tourism
The western part of Sabine-Land is in Management Area 10 , so it can be freely entered by tourists without a permit. Excursions with motor sledges or dog sleds from Longyearbyen to the Tempelfjord , where the Noorderlicht is usually frozen in the ice in spring and serves as a temporary hotel, or to the abandoned mining settlement Pyramiden north of the fjord are popular. In Adolfbukta, on the way to Pyramiden, a new hut was recently built as a starting point for tourist expeditions.
etymology
Sabine-Land is named after Sir Edward Sabine , an Irish artillery general and physicist. In 1823 he carried out investigations with the seconds pendulum in Spitzbergen .
