Sabine Achour

Sabine Achour has been Professor of Political Didactics and Political Education at the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science at the Free University of Berlin since October 2018 .

Life

Achour attended the Goethe-Gymnasium in Berlin-Wilmersdorf from 1974 and was a student councilor for politics, history and Latin. For her dissertation Citizens of the Muslim Faith. Political education in the context of migration, integration and Islam with Peter Massing at the Free University of Berlin, she received the Walter Jacobsen Prize for political education in 2015. From 2015 to 2018 she was Professor of Political Education Didactics at the Philipps University of Marburg and visiting professor at the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science.  

Her research focuses on dealing with increasing diversity, flight and migration, inclusion, continuous language education and religious plurality in a pluralistic democracy. This goes hand in hand with the question of how civic education can prepare learners and teachers for it.

She is co-editor of the magazine “ Politikum” (since 2017) and “ Wochenschau für den Politikunterricht ” (since 2015) for politics lessons. Achour is one of the founding members of the Interdisciplinary Center for Inclusion Research Berlin (ZfIB) at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Since December 2012 she has been chairwoman of the Berlin regional association of the German Association for Civic Education (DVPB).
