Sable Island (also Sable Islet or Sand Island ) is a small, uninhabited island of the Nuguria Islands in the Pacific Ocean , about 16 km southwest of the Nuguria Atoll . The approximately 2 m high island is surrounded by a coral reef . Politically, Sable Island belongs to Papua New Guinea and there to the Atolls Local Level Government of the North Bougainville District in the autonomous region of Bougainville .
