Nuguria (also Nukuria , Abgarris or Fead Islands ) is the larger of the two atolls of the Nuguria Islands in the Pacific Ocean . Politically, it belongs to Papua New Guinea and is therefore part of Melanesia . Culturally, due to the Polynesian population, the atoll is one of the Polynesian exclaves that lie outside the Polynesian triangle . Administratively, it belongs to the Local Level Government atoll of the North Bougainville District in the autonomous region of Bougainville .

geography

Nuguria is a narrow, elongated atoll with a length of 35 km and a width between 3 and 8 km. The atoll includes, especially in the east and south, numerous flat and dense coconut palm islands on the fringing reef , of which Paopao (also Nugurba , Nukaruba or Goodman Island , in the south), Huhunati (in the southeast north of Paopao) and Namotu ( in the east) are the most important. The smaller neighboring atoll of Malum is four kilometers northwest of Nuguria . Nuguria has 502 inhabitants (as of 2000) on a land area of 6.1 km², who live in a subsistence economy mainly on fish, taro and coconuts.

Around 16 km southwest of the atoll is Sable Islet , which is 2.4 meters high and surrounded by a large coral reef.
