Saccharomyces boulardii

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saccharomyces boulardii ( syn .: Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. Boulardii ) is a yeast related to Saccharomyces cerevisiae . It is used as a probiotic drug for the treatment of diarrhea and as a preventative during and after antibiotics . It was firstisolatedfrom the peel of lychee and mangosteen fruits in1923 by the French mycologist Henri Boulard in Indochina. Although this yeast is used medicinally, it has not yet been validly described because the formal new description from 1984 lacks the Latin diagnosis required at the time. Thus the name Saccharomyces boulardii is not a name for an official taxon .

Use as a medicinal substance

The yeast mushrooms are taken orally and colonize the gastrointestinal tract within a few hours, which provides favorable living conditions. Pathogens, which are often the cause of diarrhea , are inhibited and suppressed in their growth and thus the natural intestinal flora is maintained or restored. The duration of diarrhea is reduced by an average of one day. The likelihood of developing diarrhea during or after taking antibiotics is reduced. However, the available studies show methodological deficiencies. According to a meta study by the Cochrane Collaboration from 2015, yeasts are suitable for preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. In severely weakened or immunocompromised children with underlying risk factors, however, use should be avoided due to the side effects. People with immune deficiency , central venous catheters or seriously ill people should not be treated with probiotic preparations, as septic courses and deaths have also been described.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, these drugs do not require a prescription , but require a pharmacy .

Similar preparations exist with Saccharomyces cerevisiae .
