Sacramentarium Leonianum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sacramentarium Leonianum , also Sacramentarium Veronense , is a collection of liturgical prayers from the 7th century .

The original manuscript was found in the library of the cathedral chapter in Verona and published in 1735 by Giuseppe Bianchini in the fourth volume of his edition by Anastasius Bibliothecarius .

The script was attributed to Leo I by its discoverer and was therefore called Sacramentarium Leonianum . For a long time, the Sacramentarium Leonianum was considered the oldest known Sacramentarium . According to Duchesne, additions from around 538 can also be proven. The more recent research also established that the script is not a sacramentarium in the original sense of the word, but a compilation of old liturgical forms by private hands. The forms correspond to the state of the Roman liturgy of the 5th century.

A Sacramentarium, also Sacramentary, originally describes a script that only contains the prayers that the priest has to say at mass , while the other prayers, readings and hymns were to be found in other liturgical books. Today all these parts are united in the Missal .
