Saddell Castle is a castle on the east coast of the Scottish Kintyre peninsula . It is located on Saddell Bay , a side bay of Kilbrannan Sound , off the current B842, which runs along the coast to Campbeltown . In 1971 Saddell Castle was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category A.

history

Saddell Castle was built by David Hamilton , the then Bishop of Argyll . It was built on the lands of the then abandoned Cistercian monastery of Saddell Abbey after it was confiscated by the bishop. Construction began in 1508 and the castle was completed in 1512. In 1558 troops of the Earl of Sussex destroyed Saddell Castle and the castle was abandoned. The building fell to the Campbell clan , who ruled over much of Kintyre. Archibald Campbell , the first Marquess of Argyll , gave the ruins to William Ralston of that Ilk , who renovated them between 1650 and 1652. Various outbuildings were added around 1800, using stones from Saddell Monastery. Saddell Castle was abandoned a second time during the century. A second restoration took place in 1890.
