Lorenz Hörnig (* around 1577 in Apolda ; † March 12, 1624 in Pirna ) was a German sculptor.

Life

Lorenz Hörnig (other forms of name Hörnick, Hörnigk, Hörningk, Hörnung, Hornig, Hornigk, Hornung) comes from an Apolda family that is already mentioned in the hereditary book of 1549. After years of apprenticeship in Thuringia, Hörnig came to Pirna at the latest in 1599 during his time as a journeyman, and this date is linked to the estimate of his year of birth 1577. He first worked for the Pirna sculptor Michael Schwenke and later had his own workshop. Hörnig is one of the most important Mannerist sculptors in Saxony.

Quote

What the bronze made possible in terms of accuracy in depicting the electors and their wives in the grave place of the Wettins in Freiberg Cathedral , the sandstone in the hands of master Hornung achieved with the more than life-size statues of the large Bünau family as if by magic. Never again has succeeded in reproducing skin, hair, iron and fabric qualities so precisely in Saxon sandstone. "
