Safe As Milk is the debut album by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, which was released in 1967 on the Buddah Records label.

Emergence

Although Van Vliet had signed a record deal for two singles with A&M and released them with A&M Diddy Wah Diddy and Moonchild in 1966 , Jerry Moss of A&M Records did not want to publish any more songs, so Van Vliet initially worked with Artie Ripp's Kama Surta label and later with Bob Krasnow's label Buddah Records signed to record the almost finished album. The first tracks were initially recorded under the production of Gary Marker in the Sunset Sound Studios. Drummer PG Blakeley was replaced by Ry Cooder after the recordings by John French and guitarist Doug Moon. Krasnow won Richard Perry for the production, the recordings of which were subsequently relocated to the RCA Studios in Hollywood. Don Glen Van Vliet was able to win over the poet and screenwriter Herb Bermann for the revision of numerous texts. Ry Cooder took care of the arrangement for Sure 'Nuff' 'N Yes I Do and Grown so Ugly and played the slide guitar. The rest of the Magic Band around Alex St. Clair, Jerry Handley and John French was supplemented by the guest musicians Milt Holland, Taj Mahal , Russ Titleman and Sam Hoffmann. The recordings in 1967 lasted from spring (Sunset Studios) to autumn (RCA Studios). Krasnow and Richard Perry gave the production a trendy look. The album was released in Germany in 1968.
