The Sail Loft is a harbor building in the town of Stornoway on the Scottish Hebridean island of Lewis . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

description

The building is on Quay Street in Stornoway Harbor. Although the architectural features suggest that it was built at the beginning of the 19th century, the building was only built between 1830 and 1835 for use in fishing. Probably it was not a construction phase and the western part was added by 1850 at the latest. The three-story structure faces north. There are two entrance doors on the ground floor; another one on the first floor is accessible via an external staircase. There are two windows on the ground floor and six on the first floor. The second floor is illuminated by round windows along the front. Another window is located on the east side of the gable, where three further windows and an entrance door can be found on the lower floors. The facades are plastered with Harl . The building ends with a slate-covered gable roof .

Another building is adjacent to the east at right angles. In the 18th century, the customs authorities were housed there in a previous building. In 1822 it was rebuilt and initially housed a fish processing company and then the Commercial Hotel until the 1970s . A gable roof with three skylights sits on the two-story building.
