Sailor's Walk

Sailor's Walk is a residential and commercial building in the Scottish town of Kirkcaldy in Council Area Fife . In 1971, the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish list of monuments in the highest monument category A.

history

It may have originally been two separate homes for wealthy merchants or shipowners. One of these houses may have been built as early as 1460, making it the oldest surviving building in Kirkcaldy. In a construction phase in the second half of the 17th century, either the entire complex was built or a second house was built. Presumably this took place in the 1670s. In 1826 both houses came into the possession of a single person. In the late 1940s there were plans to demolish Sailor's Walk. The National Trust for Scotland took over the building and restored it in the 1950s. Vandalism caused a fire in 1994, which caused moderate damage. In 2011, Sailor's Walk was added to the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. However, its condition was classified as relatively good with low risk in 2014.

The three-story residential building with a mansard floor is located at the confluence of Malcolm's Wynd on High Street ( A921 ) across from Kirkcaldy's harbor. Its facades are plastered with Harl . Two gable fronts emerge on the south-facing main facade, which are connected to one another via a transverse, recessed part of the building. The left gable is designed as a simple stepped gable . A simple cornice on consoles runs on the left above the ground floor. Four, nine and twelve-part lattice windows of various sizes are set in irregularly along the facade . The final gable roofs are covered with red roof tiles.
