The The Thousandth Anniversary of Islam Mosque ( Russian Закабанная мечеть , Tatar Кабан арты мәчете Qaban Artı mäçete ), also Mosque of 1000 anniversary of the adoption of Islam ( Мечеть 1000 летия принятия Ислама , Ислам кабул итүнең мең еллыгы мәчете ) or shortly anniversary Mosque ( Мечеть Юбилейная ). is located in the Russian city ​​of Kazan , capital of the Republic of Tatarstan .

Based on plans by civil engineer AJ Petschnikow from 1914, the mosque was built between 1924 and 1926, on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the Islamization of the Volga Bulgarians in 922 by Khan Almusch . Stalin personally gave permission to build the mosque . It was financed by private donations from Muslims. It was the only mosque built in the region during the Soviet era . On February 6, 1930 it was closed in connection with the Soviet persecution of Muslims; it was not reopened until 1991.
