The Salal Dam is located on the Chanab River in the Reasi District of the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
The dam, completed in 1987, is located 7 km north of the district capital Reasi in the breakthrough valley of the Chanab on the southern edge of the Himalayas . It consists of two barrier structures: a 630 m long stone embankment dam on the right bank of the Chanab and a 450 m long concrete gravity dam on the left side of the river. In between there is a wooded hill. The hydropower plant is located below the dam.
The dam is used to generate electricity. The power plant originally had 3 turbines of 115 MW each. In 1994 the power plant was expanded and another 3 turbines of 115 MW each were added. The average annual electricity generation is 3082 million kWh.
The reservoir covers an area of 93.56 km². The usable storage volume is 14.78 million m³, the total storage space is 284.08 million m³.
