Salcete is a taluka (administrative unit) in the Indian state of Goa (in the district of South Goa ).

According to a local legend, the name goes back to the fact that around 1000 BC. 96 Brahmani families (Saraswats) came to the Konkani coast, 66 of them in the area of ​​today's Salcete, where they settled; in Sanskrit 66 means sassast , from which the name Salcete is supposed to be derived.

The largest and at the same time economic and administrative metropolis of the region is Margao with almost 78,000 inhabitants (2007), there are also the settlements (comunidades) Raia , Loutolim , Curtorim , Verna , Benaulim and Cavelossim .
