Salinas (Pantanal)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the southern part of the Brazilian Pantanal , more precisely in the region known as " Nhecolândia ", there are around 3 percent of the lakes with salty water. These are known locally as Salinas .

The salty character is mostly attributed to the potassium chloride . Due to the increased salt content, it is the rule that there is no superficial vegetation and no fish in such lakes - but a vast number of insect larvae, which can develop well protected from fish and thus attract an unimaginable variety of birds. The large white sand edge that forms in the dry season is very typical of the Salinas, because the concentration of salt becomes so high that grass can no longer grow.

There are still no precise explanations about the origin of the Salinas. What is clear, however, is that Salinas has practically never come into contact with a river or other body of water over the years.
