In 1919, shortly after the First World War , Max Forst founded a metal goods factory in Solingen with a focus on the manufacture of hot-formed metal parts and tools. In 1931 the company was renamed Max Forst Werkzeugfabrik . The company registered a patent for the world's first self-releasing torque wrench in 1938. A little later (1939) the torque wrench followed .

Production quickly resumed after the Second World War. In 1949 a ring ratchet with interchangeable inserts was patented. In 1957 the Max Forst tool factory changed its name to Saltus-Werk Max Forst KG . In 1987, a fully electronic torque wrench was developed , which for the first time displays, saves, evaluates and documents screw connection values. EKDS, an electronic torque wrench particularly suitable for fast production operations, was patented internationally in 1992. In 1995, Saltus registered the first electronic torque wrench with reference armless angle measurement for international patenting.

In 1997, Saltus-Werk Max Forst GmbH became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saltus Technology AG . In 2004 she applied for a patent for her first mechatronic torque wrench (mechanical release with radio transmission). In 2008 the company became independent again after the insolvency of Saltus AG. In 2010 the world's first triggering torque wrench with torque and angle documentation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025: 2005 by DAkkS (formerly DKD) will take place on July 1, 2010.

In 2012, Saltus-Werk Max Forst GmbH became a 100% subsidiary of the international Atlas Copco group, which ceased active business operations on April 1, 2018 due to unprofitability.

The name "Saltus" will continue to be used as the name for screwing tools from Atlas Copco, but these are no longer produced in Solingen.
