Saltus duriusculus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saltus duriusculus (Latin for "somewhat hard jump") is a musical figure in Christoph Bernhard's work and describes an unusual, mostly diminished jump in the melody downwards. This can take place over a sixth, seventh, or a diminished (e.g. in a tritone ) or excessive interval and was used to represent falsehood. The figure is closely related to the passage duriusculus and can also appear combined with it, e.g. B. in the aria "Buß und Reu" in the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach .
