Collection Friedhof Hörnli

The Cemetery Hörnli Collection is a museum in the municipality of Riehen near Basel and shows important objects related to Swiss and Basel burial culture .

The museum, which was founded in 1994 thanks to a private initiative by former master digger Peter Galler, is located in the Hörnli cemetery , the largest cemetery in Switzerland and the central cemetery of the Canton of Basel-Stadt , in the converted premises of the old crematorium . On 380 m² it presents objects on the history of Basel and Swiss funeral culture, such as hearses , coffins , ash urns , cemetery regulations , grave crosses, glass bead wreaths and memorabilia, but also implants from the deceased who were cremated in the crematorium.

The exhibition aims to present the subject area of death , burial and mourning , which is radically excluded from the consciousness of our society today.
