René Appel (born September 19, 1945 in Hoogkarspel ) is a Dutch writer .

Act

He began to write during his studies, initially without publishing. From 1976 to 1986 he reviewed crime fiction for the NRC Handelsblad .

He eventually worked as a lecturer in linguistics in order to take up pen himself in the late 1980s and write his first novel. He was inspired by authors such as Ruth Rendell and Patricia Highsmith . He writes detective novels that are particularly touching because of their oppressive atmosphere. They always tell of people who we could be ourselves. In 1991 and 2001 Appel received the Gouden Strop (Golden Rope), the most important Dutch award for crime literature, for which he was nominated eight times between 1987 and 2005.
