In "Samuel and Saul, two outstanding figures of the Old Testament" , the first books of dealing with a Franz Eugen Schlachter . It was published in 1890 by the Christian Kolportage Verein , Gernsbach (Baden) and Winterthur , represented by Carl Hirsch.

In this booklet, Schlachter deals with 16 reflections on the biblical figures Samuel and Saul , or the attitude of the people "Israel". It is an interpretation of the first 15 chapters of the book of 1 Samuel . On the basis of this interpretation, Schlachter conveys many spiritual truths and teachings to the reader by repeatedly drawing parallels to the everyday life of a New Testament Christian. It is one of his few classic interpretations that he published in book form.

Schlachter does not deal with the issues theologically , but in practical pastoral care in concise language.

He contrasts the spiritually positive prophet Samuel with the negative King Saul and the fickle people of Israel and then draws parallels to today's practical spiritual life.
