The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is an art museum in the 14 counties of San Angelo , Texas . The museum has an ever-growing permanent collection and is home to traveling exhibitions. The museum also has a roof sculpture collection and a research library. It provides event space and is active in artistic training.

history

In July 1981, members of the San Angelo community came together with the aim of creating a museum of fine arts. After sufficient funds were available, the museum was opened in the spring of 1985 in the renovated former district building at the historic Fort Concho. It has been home to notable traveling exhibits from the National Portrait Gallery , Library of Congress, and the Dallas Museum of Art . In 1994 the decision was made to build a new building for the museum. After raising over $ 7.2 million, the new facility on the banks of the Concho River opened in September 1999. The museum has received numerous awards, including the National Award for Museum Service from the Federal Institute for Museum and Library Services in 2003. In 2005 the museum became a member of the American Museum Association. It has an average of around 90,000 visitors a year. The permanent collection includes 277 works and is mainly focused on Texan artists.

Facilities

The museum is connected to the other side of the river and the adjacent parks via a pedestrian bridge. The building was designed by the architecture firm Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates. The controversial design features a curved roof structure that resembles a saddle and uses an eclectic mix of local materials and materials. a. made from Texan limestone. The building has an area of ​​30,000 m² and two main galleries with ceilings that are almost 14 and 11 meters high, respectively. It also includes two smaller galleries, as well as a roof terrace that doubles as a sculpture garden with views of the river and downtown San Angelo.
