Sancak-i Serif

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sancak-i Şerif , also Sanjak i Sherif ( Ottoman سنجاق شريف 'Noble flag' ), is the alleged standard of the Prophet Mohammed , which was kept as a relic in the treasury of Topkapı Sarayı and exhibited once a year in Ramadan for public veneration in the rooms of that palace.

According to religious legend, it comes from the first wars of the Prophet, later passed into the possession of the Umayyads and Abbasids and finally fell into the hands of Sultan Selim I during the conquest of Egypt .

If the Ottoman state or Islam is threatened with extreme danger, it should be taken into the camp and revealed personally by the sultan, whereupon the sultan must place himself at the head of the army and every muslim capable of arms must take part in the fight.
