Sandis Ģirģens (* 1980 ) is a Latvian lawyer and politician . He has been the interior minister of his country since January 2019.

Life

Sandis Ģirģens was born in 1980 in what was then the Latvian SSR . After graduating from school in Jēkabpils in 1998 , he completed a bachelor's degree from 1999 to 2003 at a private Latvian university in the field of law. After graduating, he worked for a large Latvian law firm from 2003 to 2009. He has been working as a freelance lawyer since 2009.

Political career

In the 2018 parliamentary election , Ģirģens stood as a candidate for the KPV LV . Although he was unable to win a mandate, after the election he worked as a member of staff for his party friend , Saeima MP Ralfs Nemiro . As part of the coalition negotiations, he was nominated by the KPV LV as Minister of the Interior and has been a member of the Kariņš cabinet since he took office on January 23, 2019.

Private

Sandis Ģirģens is the older brother of Saeima MP Kaspars Ģirģens, who was also a candidate for the KPV LV for the 2018 election. His family is in the catering business.
